When booking time in a recording studio, planning and preparation are important for both the artist and the studio. At Select Recording Studios, we aim to make the booking process clear, fair, and straightforward for everyone. One of the most common questions artists ask before booking is about our cancellation and rescheduling policy.
Because studio time involves careful scheduling, equipment preparation, and dedicated staff, we ask all artists to provide at least five days' notice if they need to cancel or reschedule a recording session. This policy helps us manage the studio calendar and gives us a fair chance to offer the time slot to another artist who may be waiting for availability.
To secure a recording session, we require a £60 deposit at the time of booking. This deposit confirms your session and ensures that the studio time is reserved exclusively for you. Once the booking is confirmed, we begin planning for the session, which may include preparing equipment, organising engineering time, and keeping that slot unavailable for other potential clients.
We completely understand that artists often lead very busy lives. Many musicians balance their creative work with jobs, travel, rehearsals, and personal commitments. Sometimes unexpected situations arise illness, work obligations, transport delays, or other last-minute changes. We genuinely try to be understanding and flexible whenever possible.
However, from time to time artists attempt to cancel a recording session the day before, or even on the morning of the session itself. While it may seem like a small change from the artist''s perspective, a last-minute cancellation can have a significant impact on the studio.
When a session is booked, that time is held specifically for that artist. If the session is cancelled too late, it becomes extremely difficult to fill the slot with another booking. This means the studio may lose several hours of potential work, which can create financial challenges.
For this reason, if a session is cancelled without the required five days' notice, the £60 deposit is normally retained by the studio. The deposit helps cover part of the time that was reserved and the work that went into organising the session. It is not intended as a penalty, but rather as a practical way to protect the studio from being left out of pocket.
Running a recording studio today is more challenging than it was in the past. The music industry has changed significantly over the years. With the rise of streaming platforms, home recording technology, and artificial intelligence tools, it has become increasingly difficult for both artists and studios to earn a steady income from music production.
In earlier years, recording studios were in constant demand because artists needed professional spaces to capture high-quality recordings. Today, many musicians record demos or even full projects at home using laptops and affordable equipment. While professional studios still offer far higher quality, acoustics, and engineering expertise, the overall demand for studio time has reduced compared with previous decades.
This means that recording studios often operate on very tight margins. Every booked session matters, and when a session is cancelled at the last minute it can have a real financial impact. Like many creative businesses, studios must balance providing a supportive environment for artists while also maintaining a sustainable business.
At Select Recording Studios, we have been working with artists for over 25 years, from beginners recording their first track to experienced professionals working on major projects. Throughout that time, our goal has always been to provide a relaxed, welcoming environment where artists can focus on their creativity.
Our cancellation policy is simply part of ensuring that we can continue offering that service to artists for many years to come. By giving five days' notice if plans change, artists help us keep the studio running smoothly and fairly for everyone.
We always encourage artists to contact us as soon as possible if they think they may need to move their session. In many cases, when we have enough notice, we are happy to reschedule to another suitable date without any issues.
Clear communication helps both the artist and the studio work together effectively. By understanding the booking process and respecting the cancellation policy, artists can focus on what really matters: creating great music in a professional and supportive recording environment.
