Paul Miles Music Producer

Some careers are built in a single room. Paul Miles's was built in vans, rehearsal spaces and studios across two decades before he ever put his name above a door.
Paul started out in the 1990s as a touring and recording artist, playing with signed bands and releasing records on labels like Beggar's Banquet, Cherry Red and Universal. Those years on the road taught him the part of the job that no course covers: how a song holds up on its twelfth night, in a room that isn't yours, in front of people who have never heard it. Time in the studio taught him the rest. Watching takes turn into finished records, he found himself more interested in what happened behind the glass than in front of it.

That shift became Select Recording Studios. Originally based in Kentish Town, it now sits in Wood Green, North London, and it carries the same idea it started with: the technical side of recording matters, but so does the atmosphere in the room. Paul works with established acts and first-timers alike, and he is deliberate about keeping the space friendly and down to earth. Musicians play better when they are comfortable, and he would rather spend an extra hour getting a performance that feels right than settle for one that merely sounds clean.

As a multi-instrumentalist, he brings guitar, bass and keyboards into the sessions, which means he can talk through an arrangement from the inside rather than from the desk. As a mix engineer and producer, he knows how to get a track to the point where it holds its own next to anything on a playlist. He moves easily across music production in genres — hip-hop, R&B, pop and dance through to rock, indie, metal and jazz — offering guidance on structure, style and technique without ever taking the song away from the person who wrote it.

The studio gear is high quality and the techniques are current, but neither is the point. The point is what an artist walks out with. Whether it is a debut single or a full-length album, Paul Miles and Select Studios offer a place to create, collaborate and finish the record you actually heard in your head.
